These days practically any small business can be run via a spreadsheet; sometimes one aspect is high volume and needs formal software to manage it. The rest does not.
I have been writing powerful spreadsheets since I was in my twenties (1984 to be exact) and these days what with "pivot" tables you just do not need databases and so forth for even quite sophisticated real time reporting.
